Personal Health Information

Your personal health information is sensitive and we aim to keep it in the strictest of confidence. You are always an active participant in your care and we encourage you to communicate with us to maintain this shared relationship.

Manitoba is governed by The Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), a privacy law that establishes rules on how we handle your personal health information. It also gives all Manitobans access to their health information with some exceptions. It requires us to ensure the confidentiality, security, accuracy and integrity of your personal health information. Your personal health information includes your health records and history, family history, nature of your care, demographic information, prescribed medication history and Personal Health Identification Numbers (PHINs).

Your right under PHIA includes

  • the right to see your personal health information, get a copy of it, and request a correction to it.
  • name a designated person, such as a family member, to access information and act on your behalf. A written document with details is required.
  • the right to know why your information is being collected

Unless you indicate otherwise and not restricted by the law, sharing of your personal health information may be required with other members of any health care team involved in your care. This may include specialist, clerical staff, insurers. This is limited to the information they need to provide you with optimum care.

If you would like to learn more about PHIA and read it in more detail, please go to the following link: https://www.gov.mb.ca/health/phia/index.html
